Support for Children Affected by Family Violence and Homelessness

At Gunida Gunyah, we know that children are often the silent victims of domestic and family violence and homelessness. That’s why we provide culturally safe, trauma-informed support through our Specialist Workers for Children and Young People (SWCYP) program.

Whether a child is staying at our Lilly Pilly Place Women’s Refuge or connected through our Gunnedah Community Hub, our specialist team is here to walk alongside families, helping children feel safe, recover from trauma, and reconnect with culture, identity, and community.

What We Offer:

  • One-on-one tailored support for children and young people under 18

  • Safe spaces for healing, play, learning, and expression

  • Help navigating school, health, legal, and cultural systems

  • Support for parents and carers to understand their child’s needs

  • Outreach support at the refuge, in homes, parks, or community locations

All our care is child-centred, trauma-informed, and culturally respectful.

Why This Matters

The trauma children experience from violence or homelessness can affect their behaviour, learning, and relationships. Our SWCYP program helps break the cycle—giving kids the chance to:

  • Heal in a safe and supportive space

  • Access meaningful pathways to wellbeing and growth

  • Strengthen emotional and cultural wellbeing

  • Improve long-term outcomes in school and life

“We’re here to support you, Mum—but we’re also here for your kids. While you focus on your healing, let us help take care of their needs too. Whether it’s counselling, school support, or just someone to yarn with, your children matter to us.”

How to Access Support

If you're staying at Lilly Pilly Place or connected to our Community Hub, just speak with one of our staff about support for your children. We also accept referrals from:

  • Parents and carers

  • Case workers and support services

  • Schools or community organisations

We’ll work with you to provide support in the way that feels right—whether it’s at the refuge, in your home, at a park, or through our Hub.
