OUR JOURNEY
Gunida Gunyah founders initially met in private homes and shared community spaces before leasing an office premises in the CBD of Gunnedah. Over the years, the organisation moved to a few different buildings before finally settling on 34-36 Farrer Road. The property was purchased on the 5th of November, 1998.
Back then Gunida Gunyah was delivering the CDEP program (Community Development Employment Projects). This program provided opportunities for Indigenous Australians to obtain and keep employement. Services delivered under the program included lawn mowing, landscaping, tree lopping, and firewood. A small team of administration staff occupied the office and were responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the CDEP prorgam and the 4 Aboriginal Social Housing Properties that Gunida Gunyah owned at the time.
The next decade saw some significant changes for Gunida Gunida. The CDEP program ceased in 2009 due to government reforms. As a result, Gunida's core focus shifted to solely providing social housing. The organisation expanded its social housing portfolio, including increasing its own Aboriginal housing stock and managing Aboriginal Social Housing properties on behalf of Local Lands Councils and the Aboriginal Housing Office.
Gunida Gunyah broadened its scope of operations to meet the growing needs of the community. Beyond tenancy support and community engagement activities, from around 2013 Gunida Gunyah started delivering community services and targeted programs that focused on the wellebing of Aboriginal families and individuals.
In 2020, Gunida Gunyah made a significant milestone by purchasing the Grand Elixxa Hotel better remebered as the iconic Clubhouse Hotel. This purchase marked the transformation of the old pub into the current Gunida Gunyah Community Hub. With the support of a large grant from the Aboriginal Housing Offices and Aboriginal Community Housing Investment Fund (ACHIF) program, the organisation successfully completed the radical transformation.
The Gunida Gunyah Community Hub serves as a vibrant hub for the community, offering a range of services and activities aimed at supporting and empowering Aboriginal people. It serves as a central gathering place for community members, providing a range of services, including community support, community programs, and cultural events.
The transformation of the Clubhouse Hotel into the Gunida Gunyah Community Hub is a testament to the organisation's commitment to community development and empowerment. With its proactive approach and dedication to serving the community, Gunida Gunyah continues to play a vital role in improving the lives and well-being of Aboriginal people across a broad region of New South Wales.
Today, Gunida Gunyah operates solely from the Community Hub in the CBD of Gunnedah. With a team of around 20 staff members, the organisation is organised into various teams, including a Planning and Development Team, a Services and Programs Team, a Finance and Assets Team, and a Housing and Tenancy Services Team. Gunida Gunyah currently owns a notable portfolio of Affordable Housing Properties, Aboriginal Housing properties, Community Housing properties, Transitional Housing Properties,Short Term Accomdoation and Crisis Accomodation for Women.
The organisation's core focus is providing community services that support individuals, families, and communities to thrive. Through a range of initiatives, Gunida Gunyah aims to address the systemic barriers and disadvantages faced by Aboriginal people, promoting their social, economic, and cultural well-being.
